ORIGINAL MHS PRODUCTION TAKES SHOTS AT SOCIETY — “Machine Works,” a Madera High School drama production written by English teacher Stephen Mintz, takes shots at numerous American traditions—school, military, marriage, and religion. The play, which will be performed Friday and Saturday nights, attempts to show how adults have been turned into machines. In one instance, a student flunks out of school to join the Army to be a “Top Gun.” The script also attacks the institution of marriage as “an exercise in futility.” The most absorbing scene comes at the end when Mintz takes on religion, faith, and evangelism. The play is Mintz’ first and last production at MHS. He is leaving the district because “it is time to move on.”
